SNMMI Procedure Standards
The US nuclear medicine society's rulebooks for how to correctly perform each type of scan or radioactive treatment, so results are comparable between hospitals.
Overview
The SNMMI Committee on Procedure Standards maintains around 80 procedure standards and practice guidelines covering nuclear medicine imaging and radionuclide therapy procedures, from FDG PET/CT and bone scintigraphy to newer documents such as the SNMMI/ACNM guideline on post-treatment imaging of 177Lu-based radiopharmaceutical therapies (2025) and joint SNMMI/EANM/ASNC/ACNM guidance on 18F-flurpiridaz PET myocardial perfusion imaging (2025). Many standards are developed jointly with EANM and other national societies (ANZSNM, CANM, CSNM) so that the same procedure recommendations apply across regions.
Each document specifies patient preparation, tracer administration, acquisition protocol, processing, interpretation and reporting elements, aiming to standardise practice across institutions well enough that multicentre trial and registry data are comparable. Standards go through a public comment period before being formally approved.
The documents are freely viewable and downloadable from the SNMMI website for individual professional use; the site explicitly prohibits unauthorised copying or reprinting, so they are open-access in practice but not openly licensed.
