Andrei Iagaru
A Stanford nuclear medicine professor who led the division for a decade and has published widely on new PET tracers, from FAPI scans of fibrosis-related proteins to whole-body PET scanners that image the entire body at once.
Overview
Andrei Iagaru joined Stanford in 2007 and served as Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging from 2016 (co-chief from 2011); Stanford's faculty listing as of September 2026 names Erin Grady as interim division chief, indicating a leadership transition, while Iagaru continues as Professor of Radiology. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers spanning 68Ga-PSMA-11 and 18F-DCFPyL PET for prostate cancer, gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) imaging, and fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) PET.
He has been a prominent voice in the debate over whether FAPI PET will replace FDG PET in oncologic staging, arguing for a complementary rather than replacement role, and is active in total-body and long-axial-field-of-view PET research and international PET/MRI consensus guideline efforts with EANM, SNMMI and ISMRM.
