Nihon Medi-Physics
Japan's largest maker of radioactive tracers for scans, now wholly owned by GE HealthCare.
Overview
Nihon Medi-Physics was incorporated on 20 March 1973 and is based at Shinsuna, Koto-ku, Tokyo. Its stated business is the "research, development, manufacture, sale, purchase and import/export of radioactive pharmaceuticals". It holds the Japanese approvals for several of the diagnostic agents in this corpus, each dated in the PMDA's own English list: DaTscan (ioflupane I-123) in September 2013, Vizamyl (flutemetamol F-18) in September 2017 and Axumin (fluciclovine F-18) in March 2021.
Ownership changed in 2025. GE HealthCare had held 50 per cent since acquiring Amersham in 2004; on 31 March 2025 it completed the purchase of the remaining 50 per cent from Sumitomo Chemical, making NMP a wholly owned subsidiary and giving GE HealthCare direct control of the Japanese radiopharmaceutical channel. In September 2025 Lantheus and GE HealthCare announced an exclusive licence for PYLARIFY (piflufolastat F-18) in Japan, which is how a US PSMA tracer reaches the Japanese market.
