Alpha Tau Medical
An Israeli company that places tiny radioactive seeds directly inside a solid tumour; the seeds release a burst of highly damaging particles that mostly stay within a few millimetres of the tumour, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Overview
Alpha Tau Medical Ltd. (Nasdaq: DRTS, DRTSW), founded in 2016 and headquartered in Jerusalem, develops Alpha DaRT (Diffusing Alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy), a device-like intratumoural radiotherapeutic technology originally developed by Prof. Itzhak Kelson and Prof. Yona Keisari at Tel Aviv University. Thin wire sources impregnated with radium-224 are inserted directly into a solid tumour; as the radium decays through a chain of short-lived daughter isotopes, high-energy alpha particles are released and diffuse a short distance (up to roughly 2.5 mm) into surrounding tissue. Because tumour vasculature tends to trap the diffusing daughter atoms while organised healthy tissue clears them, the company designs the sources to concentrate alpha-particle damage within the tumour and its immediate margin rather than delivering systemic or wide-field radiation.
Alpha DaRT has not yet received full regulatory approval for routine clinical use in the countries it operates in (the US, Canada, Europe and Israel) and remains investigational, but is in multiple clinical trials spanning skin, head and neck, pancreatic, lung, prostate and brain tumours. Reported data include a pooled first-in-human analysis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (100% local disease control in evaluable patients, presented at Digestive Disease Week 2026) and an interim analysis of Alpha DaRT combined with pembrolizumab in recurrent, inoperable head and neck cancer (75% objective response rate, 37.5% complete response in the first eight patients, unpublished as of the company's reporting). The company completed enrolment of its IMPACT pilot study (48 patients, US/Canada/Israel) combining Alpha DaRT with first-line chemotherapy in unresectable or metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma in August 2026, with initial data expected in early 2027 (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06698458).
In 2026 Alpha Tau announced a strategic collaboration with Tolmar to develop and commercialise Alpha DaRT for prostate cancer in the United States, including a $20 million equity investment at a 25% premium, $15 million toward expanded US manufacturing, and up to $161.5 million in development, regulatory and commercial milestones for the first indication, plus an ongoing supply agreement. Alpha Tau secured a radioactive materials licence for its first commercial-scale Alpha DaRT manufacturing facility in Hudson, New Hampshire, in October 2025, with a first-phase nameplate capacity of roughly 400,000 sources.
