## TL;DR

A German medical device company that makes a skin-patch radiotherapy for early skin cancer: a paste containing a radioactive isotope, rhenium-188, is applied over the tumour for under three hours instead of surgery.

## Summary

OncoBeta GmbH, headquartered near Munich, Germany, is a privately held medical device and radiochemical company specialising in epidermal (skin-surface) radioisotope therapy for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Its product, Rhenium-SCT (Skin Cancer Therapy), applies a paste containing the beta-emitting radioisotope rhenium-188, embedded in a resin matrix, to basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Bowen's disease lesions via an adhesive protective film; beta particles deposit about 92% of their energy within roughly 3 mm of depth, sparing underlying tissue, in a single outpatient session typically lasting 45-180 minutes depending on lesion size and depth (target dose around 50 Gy). No surgical incision is required and the company reports patients can resume normal activity once the film and dried paste are removed.

Rhenium-SCT has been CE-certified since 2014 and holds additional device registrations in Australia (ARTG), Spain, New Zealand and Singapore. The rhenium-188 itself is produced on demand from a tungsten-188/rhenium-188 generator, sold separately by OncoBeta to hospitals and nuclear medicine facilities (available up to 55.5 GBq/1.5 Ci of 188W, not for direct human use in that form), decoupling clinics from having to source the isotope from external radiopharmacies.

Clinical evidence includes a long-term retrospective study (2005-2014 cohort, 55 lesions) reporting complete remission in all treated lesions with no reported complications, and the ongoing international, multicentre EPIC-Skin Phase IV study; a 12-month interim analysis across sites in Australia, Austria, Germany, the UK and South Africa (184 patients, 254 lesions) reported an overall response rate of 97.3% and complete response rate of 94.1% (94.1% BCC / 94.2% SCC, per OncoBeta's own 12-month clinical paper), favourable quality-of-life and cosmetic outcomes, no reported pain during treatment, and no Grade 3 or 4 toxicities at 12 months (Grade 2 toxicity in 6.9%). OncoBeta positions Rhenium-SCT as an alternative to surgery for patients where excision carries cosmetic or comorbidity concerns, particularly for lesions on the face, scalp or other cosmetically sensitive sites.
